Projects Involved with: CRISPR,
Friedreich's Ataxia (FRDA)

I am a PhD student in the Genetics & Genomics PhD program and have joined this lab through the college of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Physiology. I am interested in my own rare disease Friedreichs Ataxia (FRDA) and helping the field better understand its pathophysiology. My dissertation work is on identifying gene modulators of the transcriptional phenotype of FRDA in human induced pluripotent stem cells differentiated into cardiomyocytes (hPSC-CMs). I will do this through use of a novel method: Perturb-seq - this is a CRISPR screen coupled with single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) readout. In the lab I love mentoring and outside lab I love fundraising and raising awareness for my disease (mainly through FARA and MDA).

Artemis- Service Dog and Lab Favorite.

Artmeis is a 1.5 year old (as of May 2023) brindle female Dutch Shepard. She is Christian's service dog. She has been a part of the lab and has gone on work trips, SLAS 2024 in Jupiter, FL and possibly the FRDA Symposium in London England.

Projects involved with: Cellular work

I am an undergrad student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a major in biology and a minor in disabilities in society. I am very interested in pursuing a career in dentistry after graduating from the University of Florida in May of 2024. In the lab, I love the hands-on experience and the opportunity to work alongside my amazing mentor, Christian Maugée, in regards to helping him research his rare disease: Friedreichs Ataxia (FRDA). Outside of the lab, I enjoy doing service work, working out, and spending time with my friends and family.

Projects involved with: Molecular Biology

I am an undergraduate student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, working on my B.S. in Biology with a minor in Art History. I currently work under postdoc Dr. Noble with biological scientist Julia Bartel, M.S., helping on his various projects and gaining experience with gene editing using programs such as DECODR and TIDE. Additionally, I am learning techniques in PCR, extraction, and other molecular assays. My goal is to employ CRISPR technology to diseases such as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder. I plan to get my master’s in the department of Microbiology and Cell Science, then apply to an M.D./Ph.D. program.
